NEW CUBA DESTINATION!

Trying to keep a Tarpon out of the mangroves

Trying to keep a Tarpon out of the mangroves

Faro Lodge is due to take its first guests in April of 2020. Located at the very western end of Cuba, this is a remote, unexplored fishery. I recently had the opportunity to fish it for 2 days, and we had excellent Tarpon fishing although hampered by difficult weather.

El Faro Lodge

El Faro Lodge

This is a land-based operation, and all guests will stay in their own comfortable bungalows. After breakfast each day, guests will transfer 5 minutes to the marina where skiffs are stored to start their fishing. One group of 2 anglers, each day, will transfer further by car to meet their skiff to explore new waters where both Bonefish and Permit are expected to be sighted.

This is billed as an exploratory trip, although the outfitter and their guides have good familiarity with the habitat from their own fishing. Largely, this should be an excellent Tarpon fishery. There are resident fish here throughout the year, and with the arrival of Spring migratory fish push in. The coastline here is a myriad of mangroves, bays, channels and rivers which should make this fishing diverse and interesting.. There are also many Snook here, some of a very large size.

Travel to the lodge is overland, and takes about 5 1/2 hours from Havana. We will stop part way through in Pinar de Rio for lunch, and a great visit to one of the world’s most famous Tobacco farms. We will arrive at Faro in the evening, and have time to get used to our surroundings. After that, we will have six full days of fishing. Because travel back to Havana takes more than half the day, most of us plan on spending that night in Havana and leaving the next morning.
