NEWLY-ADDED CUBA WEEKS - 2025 (PART 1)

PLAYA LARGA CUBA, MAY 27-JUNE 4, 2025

$4699 pp double occupancy (upgrades available)

I will host this week, which will be my 33rd trip to Cuba, and somewhere around my 45th week spent on the island. I will meet the group in Havana, and do my best to organize some activities that will help people understand the history of the city, as well as life in Cuba. (Havana expenses not included in trip price)

We will leave Havana on the afternoon of the 28th, and transfer 3 hours to the small town of Playa Larga. Playa Larga lies on the northern beach of the famous Bay of Pigs and is located just outside the entrance to the Zapata National Park. We will stay in humble but friendly Cuban-owned guest houses, and will be able to enjoy the water of the bay and the beach itself after fishing each day. This trip is unique, in all those offered in Cuba, where guests not only stay on land, but have the chance to experience life in Cuba every day.

Our fishing will be varied. Some days, we will fish the saltwater flats known as Las Salinas. To get there, we transfer about 40 minutes by van into the national park to a small marina where we will meet our guides and venture off in our skifts. Bonefish are plentiful here, and can be stalked from the skiff or on foot. There are also Permit on the outside beaches as well as the interior bays and flats. Resident Tarpon live here every day of the year, and are joined by many more fish arriving from the nearby deep water as the flats warm. There are also Snook, Jacks, Snapper and Barracuda in Las Salinas.

The other fishery is extremely unique for Cuba. Our group will also have the opportunity to fish the Rio Hatiguanico which is located about an hour from Playa Larga. This is an isolated jungle river which drains the massive Zapata swamp. There are almost always Tarpon here, and they range in size from babies in the feeder creeks, to 20-30 pound teenagers living in the main river, to really big Tarpon which show up to gorge on the catfish which also live in the river.
